Trump Doj files a civil prosecution against Maine in transgender athletes in female sports

The Ministry of Justice brought an action against Maine with the aim of challenging state policy concerning transgender athletes who participate in the sports of girls and women, the prosecutor General Pam Bondi said on Wednesday.

The trial alleges that Maine’s policy violates title IX and stems from a broader effort from the Trump administration to highlight a problem which they consider as a politically damaging damage to the Democrats.

“The state of Maine, through its Ministry of Education, openly flouts and with challenge the anti-discrimination federal law by applying policies that oblige girls to compete with boys of sports competitions designated exclusively for girls,” said the trial. “By prioritizing gender identity on biological reality, Maine’s policies deprive the athletes of equitable competition girls, refuse them equal sporting opportunities and expose them to increased risks of physical injuries and psychological damage.”

Bondi announced the trial alongside the anti-trans-trans militant Riley Gaines and other parents and students of Maine who opposed the policies of the state concerning transgender athletes.

“The Ministry of Justice will not pass when women are victims of sports discrimination. This is sport. It is also the personal security of these young women,” Bondi in Remarks at Doj. “I have met many of these women in recent weeks and months, and what they have experienced is horrible.”

The Attorney General Pam Bondi attended a press conference, while revealing actions against the state of Maine, which is locked in a dispute with the Trump administration on Transgender Policy, at the Washington Ministry of Justice on April 16, 2025.

The trial is probably only the first in a series of legal challenges brought by the Trump administration, after Bondi previously sent warning letters in February to the officials of the state of Maine, California and Minnesota ordering them to “comply with the anti-discrimination federal laws which force them to prevent female sports”.

Maine’s Democratic Governor Janet Mills exploded the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate Maine’s federal funding as an executive surpassing and minimized the issue of transgender athletes participating in the sporting events of girls and women.

“Because there are two, perhaps two, trans athletes who participate in the Maine schools at the moment, they have decided to close the financing of the school nutrition program, the school lunch program, said Mills in an interview earlier this week.” The law says that if you do not like what a state is done here, you cannot simply remove the funds here. “
