Rep. Elise Stefanik Eyes New York Governor Sage in 2026, according to sources

Representative Elise Stefanik, a key republican ally of President Donald Trump, is considering a race for the governor of New York, a source familiar with his thinking in ABC News.

Stefanik’s office did not immediately comment.

Governor Kathy Hochul presents himself in re -election in 2026 in the Empire State and was in the running for his second full mandate.

President Donald Trump appointed Stefanik as the United Nations ambassador and was replaced as president of the House Republican Conference by Michigan representative Lisa McClain.

However, on March 27, a week before his Senate confirmation vote, Trump announced that he was withdrawing his appointment, citing the thin republican majority as the razor in the House of Representatives.

“There are others who can do a good job at the United Nations. Therefore, Elise will stay at the Congress, will join the leadership team of the Chamber and will continue to fight for our incredible American peoples,” said Trump on Truth Social.

“It is a question of intensifying as a team, and I do it as a leader, to ensure that we can seize this mandate and deliver these historical results,” Stefanik told Fox News that evening.

Addison Dick, spokesperson for New York State Democrats, rejected the news of Stefanik’s possible race, saying in a statement that New York GOP “cannot present a serious candidate for their Pathetic Minions of Trump”.

“New Yorkers do not want to have anything to do with Trump’s Loyalists’ clown’s show that focuses only on activation of Trump’s agenda which increases costs, postponement of health care and the attack on New York freedoms,” he said in a statement.

The New York State MP has increased among the ranks on the hill for her hard conservative positions.

She played a key role in Congress’s response to anti-Semitism on university campuses in the midst of the War of Israel-Hamas. She also accused the United Nations of anti -Semitism.

Although largely democratic, New York State has seen the voters change their red in the past two years.

Hochul won the elections in 2022 with only 377,834 votes, or around 53% of the total vote, beating the American representative Lee Zeldin. During the 2018 elections, then-gov. Andrew Cuomo won more than 1.4 million votes, or around 59.55% of the total vote, beating the Director of the Comté de l’Évé, Marc Molinaro.
