The Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich said that the selection of Pope Leo XIV is part of the current political landscape, especially during the Trump administration exam.
“I think he will help finish and complete our political agenda. He will also talk about immigrants, because he knows the suffering of people and the real needs they have for a better life,” said Cupich on Sunday at the co-year old “this week” Martha Raddatz. “And he also knows that the inhabitants of Oceania, for example, where the – the levels of sea up are just – get – crushing these islands, where people try to escape, he sees the drug trade which occurs in Central and South America where there are weapons of the United States.
Pope Leo XIV entered history Thursday as the first American pope. The pope, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, was born in Chicago but lived in Peru for about 20 years before being finally exploited by the late Pope Francis to serve the Vatican.
During the papacy of Leo XIV, he should face difficult questions concerning the Church – including the actions of President Donald Trump.

Pope Leo XIV is a former student of Catholic University Villanova. Villanova president, Reverend Peter Donohue, said Pope Leo XIV represents both the United States and the world.
“I think [Leo XIV] is really that, you know, he is someone who has an American spirit but who also has a global spirit, “said Donohue on” this week “.
Here are more protruding facts from cupich and donohue interviews:
Cupich on the current political landscape
Raddatz: And this morning, of course, the pope speaks to people. And I was interested because he said, I wear the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people in the heart. He also talked about the sadness of what’s going on in the Gaza Strip. What does that tell us about this pope?
Cupich: Well, he took over the words of Pope Francis that there is a world war in strike. And this is something for him to be a voice, as he said, for peace at the very beginning of his announcement when he was presented to the people. He carefully careful. And I would just assert that here you had 133 cardinals from 71 different countries capable of making a decision within 24 hours. I hope it is a sign of unity that the rest of the world can kiss.
Cupich on the world history of Pope Leo XIV
Raddatz: Talk about what an American as a pope means, since he has lived in Peru for so many years and has a world vision.
Cupich:: And he is a Peruvian citizen. He has a Peruvian passport. I think it is important and to be recognized. I hope he now has a new platform to reintroduce what the Church has always asked in terms of its social justice program and that will give people another opportunity to take a second glance at what Francis said. But now in the, in the words and voice of an American who speaks like an American, I think it will be very powerful in the future.
Cupich on the scandal of sexual abuses in the Catholic Church
Raddatz: And, cardinal, I have to ask you questions about this, the survivor network of people abused by priests, as they are called, wrote an open letter this week attracting attention to sexual abuse in the Church and looking at how – before becoming a pope, who – this alleged managed some of the allegations allegedly. How do you think he will manage the history of this church in this regard?
Cupich: Well, I know by talking to him and also looking at his treatment of cases, that he is very attached to the standards which were put by Pope Francis and that he cares. He has a meeting file with the victims, to report things to the authorities, to do the investigations and also to contact the victims. I am convinced that he will move in this direction. And everything I saw shows that it is determined for that.

Donohue on the meaning of Pope Leo XIV
Raddatz: And obviously, many have been made of him as a American. I want you to describe this part of him who is an American. Why is it so important that we have an American pope?
Donohue: I think that for American Catholics, it was something that we never really thought possible. Whenever people talk about it – it was always like – you know, America is such a powerful nation. The church has always been a little suspicious of having, you know, the Pres-, the Pope being an American. But I think that for Leo – I always try to get used to calling him – it is something he certainly grew up in America. It is a native chicago. He loves Chicago, his family, his brother still lives there. He comes back here every time he can. He has friends in the region. But his – his global experience has not really been in America. Thus, he – he served very little time here in the United States as an Augustinian. Most of his time was in Peru or Rome, so his experience was – while growing American, his experience after university and certainly after being ordained a priest – was still much more global, much more international.
