The key republican says that he opposes Trump’s controversial choice for the best prosecutor to DC

President Donald Trump’s plan to promote the United States’s lawyer for the Columbia Ed Martin district, who repeatedly defended the rioters on January 6, in the permanent position seems to face a difficult battle after a key republican of the Senate said on Tuesday that it would not support the appointment.

Senator Thom Tillis of North Caroline told ABC News that he would not support Trump’s candidate to become the next American lawyer of Washington, DC, a message which, according to him, was relayed to the White House.

“At this stage, I told the White House that I would not support his appointment,” said Tillis, who is ready to re -election next year, at ABC News.

Tillis met Martin on Monday evening after expressed publicly the reluctance of Martin’s appointment because of concerns about his work representing the defendants of January 6 and the inflammatory comments spent on the riot.

Martin, said Tillis, did a “good job to explain how there were people who probably caught up there”, but that it was not enough to satisfy his concerns.

“I think anyone who violated the perimeter should have been in prison for a while,” said Tillis. “Whether 30 days or three years is questionable, but I have no tolerance for anyone who entered the building on January 6, and that’s probably there that most friction was,” said Tillis.

Tillis is a key republican vote on the senate judicial committee which will be responsible for determining whether Martin’s appointment should be advanced to a final vote on the Senate soil.

Martin has been the acting lawyer for the United States since the start of the administration, but his interim mandate expires on May 20, which means that he should be confirmed by then to continue directing the office.

A way to follow concerns the chief judge of the DC district court, judge Jeb Boasberg, to choose the next candidate.

This is extremely improbable given Trump’s apparent disdain for Boasberg who supervised a number of related cases of Trump.

Boasberg recently noted a probable cause that the Trump administration had been out of the court when officials in March ignored its order to transmit two planes carrying alleged members of Venezuelans gangs in El Salvador.

If Tillis votes with all the Democrats to oppose the appointment and that no other Republican turns, the committee will be binding and the appointment of Martin will not be sent to the ground for a final vote.

But there are still several ways to get around this. Tillis could choose to vote to advance without recommendation, allowing the appointment to go to the Senate floor, even without the support of Tillis.

Losing more republicans on the panel could be insurmountable.

The calendar of a vote of the judicial committee is also evolving for the moment, because a source close to the confirmation process confirms that the president of the judicial power Chuck Grassley has not listed a committee vote for Martin on the agenda of the Committee this week in the midst of increasing concerns concerning his worded support.

This delay could make almost impossible for the Senate to take a final vote on Martin before May 20.

The White House reiterated his support for Martin in a X post Tuesday.

“Ed Martin is a fantastic American lawyer for DC and will continue to implement the law and the order of the president in Washington. He is the right man for work and we are looking forward to his confirmation,” said the White House spokesman Alex Pfeiffer.

Martin, who competed to become the best prosecutor in one of the most important American lawyer’s offices in the country, promoted Donald Trump’s “Stop The Steal” campaign and was himself seen on the Capitolian field during the attack on the American Capitol.

His mandate leading the office was responsible for controversy.

Martin has moved to shoot or start dozens of best career lawyers who investigated the Capitol attack, he sent threatening letters to the best democrats and other political opponents to President Trump, suggesting that he would target them with criminal investigations.

He recently had to apologize for his past praise of a riot of January 6 who had a long history of anti-Semitic statements and who sadly published photos of himself disguised as Adolf Hitler.

Martin also had to provide several additional letters to the Committee in recent weeks after omitting to disclose many media appearances on extreme right outlets such as Infowars and Russian-propaganda Spoutnik and RT networks.

Trump urged the Republicans to vote for Martin, saying on his social media platform on Monday evening that “if he is approved, he will not let you down”.
