Grammy RominationThe singer & B Angie Stone, who founded an early female rap group and then helped launch the sound on the Neo-Soul sound, died early Saturday in a car accident, according to the representative of the late Star. She was 63 years old.
The artist was involved in a fatal car accident early Saturday morning in Montgomery, Alabama, the representative of Stone, Deborah R. Champagne.
At the time of the accident, Stone and the members of his group went to Atlanta after a performance in the previous night, according to a statement from the independent label Srg–. An 18 wheels struck the Sprinter Van Stone was a passenger, which made him return, according to the press release.

The close friend of Stone and a former group comrade, Gwendolyn “Blondie” Chisolm from the sequence, identified his body in a hospital in Montgomery, said Champagne. Chisolm did not travel with Stone at the time of the accident, according to Champagne.
The singer had to go to Baltimore for a half-time performance at the CIAA basketball conference on Saturday afternoon.
Stone is survived by a daughter, Diamond Stone, and a son, Michael d’Angelo Archer II.

“Never in a million years, we have never expected this horrible news,” they said in a statement. “Our mom is and will always be our whole. We are always trying to treat and we completely have a broken heart.”
Born Angela Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961 in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone grew up singing Gospel music in church and first accelerated with the first female rap group The Sequence, known for their 1979 “Funk You Up” tube.
