Zelenskyy thanks us for his support after the week of difficult diplomacy, urges “real reality”

London – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for years of American support in a statement ending a tumultuous week of transatlantic diplomacy which experienced a dramatic and public break with the administration of President Donald Trump.

Zelenskyy has supervised the awareness of this week as the start of a longer process which could lead to a peace agreement to put an end to the invasion of his country by Russia. “There will be many meetings and joint efforts in the coming days and weeks,” said Zelenskyy in a video published on the presidential website.

“There will be a diplomacy for peace,” he added. “And for the good of all of us standing together – Ukraine, the whole of Europe and necessarily America.”

The ardent Friday of Zelenskyy with Trump and vice-president JD Vance demonstrated the divergence in the Ukrainian and American visions of the Russian war, a blame for which Trump has attributed several times and falsely to kyiv while seeking to undermine the legitimacy of Zelenskyy.

Russian officials celebrated the disastrous meeting. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday on Trump’s administration that Trump’s administration was “rapidly evolving” “foreign policy configurations,” putting them “largely in accordance with our vision”.

In his Sunday declaration, Zelenskyy said that Ukrainians “understand the importance of America, and we are grateful for all the support we have received from the United States. There was not a single day when we did not feel grateful. Because it is gratitude for the preservation of our independence.”

“We need peace, not an endless war,” he added. “And that is why we say that security guarantees are the key to this.”

Zelenskyy attended a summit of European leaders in London on Sunday. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he agreed with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron that the United Kingdom and France would work with Ukraine to formulate a peace plan which will then be presented in the United States

Starmer described a plan including the continuation of aid flows to Ukraine and the maintenance of economic pressure on Russia. The Prime Minister said that any sustainable peace agreement must ensure the sovereignty and security of Ukraine, and that kyiv must be at the negotiating table.

In the event of agreement, Starmer said that Europe will continue to help Ukraine dissuade the future military action in Russia. He also said that there would be a “coalition of wishes” to help defend Ukraine.

Starmer said the United Kingdom is ready to support the plan with ground boots and air planes. He said that he also recognizes that not all countries could make this type of commitment.

Starmer stressed that any agreement would need strong support in the United States to succeed.

Zelenskyy said on Sunday that he had received “clear support from Europe”, declaring “an even larger unit, even stronger for the cooperation” of his weekend meetings.

“Everyone is united on the main point – for peace to be real, real security guarantees are necessary,” said the president. “And this is the position of our whole Europe – of the whole continent.”

“In the near future, we all in Europe will shape our common positions – the lines we must carry out and the lines on which we cannot compromise,” said Zelenskyy. “These positions will be presented to our partners in the United States.”

“Robust and sustainable peace, and the right agreement at the end of the war are really our shared priority,” he added.
